Welcome to Washington Alternative High School’s Independent Study Program!
We’re excited to offer a flexible and supportive learning option for students in grades 4 through 12 who thrive outside of the traditional classroom setting.

Our Independent Study program is designed to meet a wide range of learning needs and styles. Whether a student is seeking a more personalized pace, a different environment, or simply needs flexibility, this program provides structure, guidance, and academic rigor.

Elementary students (grades 4–6) are paired with a dedicated teacher who provides live instruction, sets the pace for learning, and offers consistent support. This approach blends structured lessons with the freedom of a more personalized learning experience.

Secondary students (grades 7–12) meet with dedicated teachers for one hour daily and complete their coursework through an online platform called Subject. To stay on track for graduation, students are expected to complete three courses per quarter—earning 5 credits per course, which equates to a semester’s worth of work. This model encourages independent learning while ensuring students remain academically accountable.

Participation in the Independent Study program is completely voluntary. Students must maintain adequate academic progress to continue in the program, but with the right level of commitment and support, they can truly thrive in this flexible learning environment.
